The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is Austria’s largest non-university research and science institution. The OeAW has about 760 members and 1,800 employees distributed within 26 research institutes throughout Austria. The academy is dedicated to basic and interdisciplinary research. The basic research is in four main research fields, namely arts, humanities, the social sciences and natural sciences. IQOQI Innsbruck is a research institute under the Austrian academy of sciences. The primary focus of the research institute is to conduct scientific research in theoretical and experimental quantum physics areas. Research topics range from the foundations of quantum physics to their applications, for example for metrology, sensor technology, quantum information processing and quantum simulations. Research institute has privileged to host both international and local researchers. International collaboration with researchers around the globe has resulted in high quality research outputs. The institute closely collaborates with the university of Innsbruck on scientific, technical and infrastructure aspects.
Role within PASQuanS 2
From the OEAW side, IQOQI Innsbruck team led by Christian Roos participates on the PASQuans2. The research goal of the team within PASQuanS is to build a trapped ion quantum simulator consisting up to 100 ions in a linear string with individual qubit control. A linear string of ions will be held with the help of time varying and stationary electric fields in side an ultra-high vacuum system. The ions will be laser cooled to their motional ground state and optically controlled to perform state preparation, quantum simulation and individual basis readout. Individual qubit controlled will be carried out using a tightly focused laser beam steerable up to 100 ions. The site selective readout of each ion will be performed with commercially available cameras.
